The Sigiriya is an ancient rock fortress in the Central Province, of Sri Lanka. It is also known as Sinhagiri (Lion Rock) and is one of the best-preserved ancient urban-planning examples. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and most popular among the World Heritage sites in Sri Lanka. The fortress is built on top of a 200-meter-tall rock column and has beautiful frescoes and leonine rock art.
Anuradhapura is a sacred ancient city in Sri Lanka founded in the 4th century BC, whose beautiful ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over time, Anuradhapura became one of the great capitals of Sri Lanka, garnering both political and religious significance for almost 14 centuries.
Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993 AD. It comprises many monuments built by Sri Lankan kings and Indian invades. This marvelous ancient city is a UNESCO world heritage sites.
Ritigala is a towering mountain found in the central highlands of Sri Lanka and it is where you’ll find the Ritigala Forest Monastery. This is an ancient Buddhist monastery that dates back many centuries and is among one of the oldest structures of its kind found on the island.
The mountain itself has four peaks that tower over the surrounding landscape. The monastery itself is found on the eastern side of the mountain, right at the foot of a gorge that main peak of Ritigala from its northern ridge. Right near the entrance of the monastery, you’ll find a large man-made reservoir called the Banda Pokuna.
The monastery itself is distinguished by elaborate stone bridges, raised platforms, and large courtyards. These were all common features associated with other contemporary monasteries of the time.
Now, a visit to the Ritigala Forest Monastery isn’t all about the monastery and its ruins either. As you trek along this mountain range, you’ll be able to spot a fantastic array of wildlife and avifauna as well.
